A 13-year-old Chinese girl, Fan Yi(Nancy),who had her primary education in US, recently published her first fairy tale, Swordbird. The English fairy tale was listed as the bestseller of children’s fiction in the US, the Shanghai Evening Post reported.
Fan Yi was greatly interested in observing birds ever since she was a little girl. In Hamilton, New York, where she lives, she often watches kingfishers and woodpeckers flying over her house from the small woods nearby. And the inspiration for writing the book Swordbird actually came from one of her dreams. At that time, she was studying American history in school and happened to read many articles in magazines about the 9·11 terrorist attacks. One day, she had a dream in which some rosefinches and bluejays were controlled by some black birds and began to fight with each other. When she woke up, she decided to turn her dream into a story and to convey her message for peace to the public.
In order to get her book published in China, Fan translated the entire English version into Chinese.
“It is a learning process. Since I didn’t know many Chinese idioms, I had to get help from my mom and dad from time to time. For another thing, a lot of poems in the original story are written in rhyme. So when I translated them into Chinese, I wanted to make sure that they were in rhyme, too,” she said.
Fan Yi was born in Beijing in 1993. She stayed in Beijing until she finished her first grade of primary school. Then she moved with her parents to the United States when she was seven. Two years later, she started to write her English story.
In March, this year, the book was published by Harper Collins Publishers. It was selected as the week’s bestseller of children’s fiction by the New York Times soon after it was published.
In future, Fan Yi might write more series for her book. It is expected that her Swordbird Prelude(序篇)might come off the press next year.

With big handbags becoming a key fashion accessory(配饰)for working women, health experts are warning they can also become a key health concern.
Bags for women have become bigger and heavier as designers combine briefcases with handbags and straps have become longer, resulting in many users complaining of neck, shoulder and back problems.
“I see so many women with neck pains and headaches and what I usually do is look for their purse and pick it up,”said Jane Sadler, a family practice physician at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas.“We take it over to the scale and weigh it and usually they’re anywhere from 7 to 10 pounds. We’re really going to see women with more and more problems later on if we continue the big purse craze.”
William Case, a physical therapist(临床医生)in private practice in Houston, Texas, urged designers“to place a cute, educational caution tag(标签)on all bags to inform purchasers of potential neck and shoulder dangers.”Above all, he recommended correct posture while carrying big purses, keeping the head and shoulders upright. Patients should also frequently change the size and weight of purses carried.
“The extra-large purses are quite extraordinary. They look beautiful when the women wear them, but I don’t know how aware they are of the potential problems,”Case said.
Placing objects on one shoulder was one of the least efficient ways of carrying a load, according to a professor from Cornell University in New York State.“This causes a great imbalance,”he said.“If a big bag is a fashion accessory, then occasional and symbolic use is fine. If not, then keep it light.”

It’s all hot air!
For hundreds of year, human beings have been deeply interested in the idea of flying, but it was only in the eighteenth century that a piece of practical equipment was designed to achieve this aim. The French brothers Montgolfier observed that paper bags filled with smoke tended to rise. From these small beginnings, they developed the first hot air balloon, and the first manned balloon flight took place at Versailles in 1783.
Almost at once, ballooning became very popular, but it was the gas balloon which became more widely used than the hot air balloon. The gas balloon in turn was replaced by the airship, which gave way to the more reliable aeroplane at the beginning of the twentieth century. But the hot air balloon never died out completely, and during the 1960’s, using new materials and a safer method of producing hot air, it actually took off again.
By the 1980’s, marketing managers had realized that balloons made wonderful advertising boards and soon the skies were full of brightly colored and excitingly shaped advertisements for everything from butter to shoes.
Ballooning is an uncertain activity. Take-off is entirely determined by the local weather conditions. “Safety first!” is the strict rule and pilots who ignore it have short flying careers. Preparing the balloon for flight needs teamwork. The same team will follow the balloon as it flies in order to get it back when it lands, and no one is sure where the balloon will land exactly. The pilot carries out a last-minute check before flying and briefs the passengers. Nothing should be forgotten, as important objects left on the ground are difficult to pick up from 300 meters.
The flight itself takes place silently, interrupted by the very loud noise from the gas burner as more hot air is put into the balloon envelope. Soon, even nervous passengers begin to enjoy the feeling of floating gently over the countryside, admiring the interesting patterns of roads and fields below. There is a feeling that problems have been left behind on the ground. There is a sense of freedom.
Landing can sometimes be uncomfortable, depending on wind speed and ground, but as long as the passengers hold on tight and stay in the basket, there is little danger of injury and every chance that they will want to repeat the experience.
63.Which of the following is correct according to the order of their appearance in history?

Be sure you’re at the 2007 Super Conference, the 88th national meeting of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association. Ian Morrison, a futurist and author, will share his long-term forecasting on changing business environments and throw light on the development of the newspaper business model. Later in the day, you won’t want to miss David Wilkins, the American ambassador to Canada, as he discusses affairs affecting U.S.-Canada relations. Abby Subark is a mother of two from Boston. “For my kids, I’m nervous. I don’t know if they’ll be able to achieve their American dream.” She may be right. More than hard work or education, the best way to get rich in America is to be born rich.
It is the case that somebody who is in the upper third of income, with poor scores at the bottom on tests when they are in eighth grade, is more likely to go to college and finish college than a poor kid with the tip scores. That’s what the working persons’ children are up against.
The Economic Policy Institute finds it would take a poor couple with 2 children 9 or 10 generations to achieve middle class status. That’s about 200 years. The typical feature of American opportunity has always been the ability to do better than your parents. But compared with similar developed countries, the United States ranks fifth out of six for so–called intergenerational mobility (变动).
If you look at the mechanisms (机制) for upward mobility that were so readily available 50 years ago, they are becoming out of reach, like plentiful factory jobs with good wages and affordable education and health care.
White families are twice as likely as blacks to be upwardly mobile. For most people in America today, where you end up depends on where you start.
If you started in the middle–income class, about 40 to 45 percent of what you are making right now is due the fact that your parents were in the middle – income class. The rest is up to you.
But for the millions of people who find themselves below the poverty line and the millions more who are the working poor, their starting point for the American dream leaves them painfully far away from the middle class.
71.The main idea of the passage is .
A.How the middle class comes about in the U.S.
B.It’s hard to realize the American dream for the poor.
C.Wealth and social status depend on family background.
D.Upward mobility in America has never been easy.
72.Which of the statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.People used to have job opportunities and welfare for upward mobility.
B.A great many poor people can hardly realize their American dream.
C.You can make all your dreams come true in America if born rich.
D.Rich kids are more likely to go to college than poor kids.
73.The underlined sentence “where you end up depends on where you start” most probably means .
A.Your starting point cannot determine your destination.
B.Only a high goal can ensure success.
C.One’s birth has nothing to do with his fate.
D.One’s family lays solid foundation for his future achievements.
74.Why is Abby Subark nervous?
A.Her kids don’t want to compare with other rich kids in achievement.
B.Her kids don’t want to achieve success at all.
C.Her kids can achieve success through hard work and education.
D.Her kids can’t reach their goal without a rich family.
75.What can we infer after reading the passage?
A.Poverty causes people much pain.
B.People below the poverty line can never be in the middle class.
C.Lower starting point makes it hard for people to realize their dream.
D.Poor people’s starting point is too low.

She believed him and cooked a big and nutritious meal for him. She said “Take more care of yourself as you work too hard, my dear son”. But Li Hua’s face turned red at his mother’s words and he couldn’t help blaming himself. Later he made up his mind to work really hard and devoted all the remaining precious time to his study.
